Discover Catalan Art Nouveau’s lesser-known gem.
When we think of Modernisme, Gaudí’s iconic landmarks like the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, or La Pedrera usually come to mind. But Europe’s most significant Catalan Art Nouveau site served a very different purpose—and despite its importance, it remains surprisingly under the radar.
Welcome to Hospital de Sant Pau, a unique cultural and scientific complex, designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Alongside Gaudí and Josep Puig i Cadafalch, he paved the way for Modernist architecture in Catalonia.

The original Santa Creu and Sant Pau hospital was built over 500 years ago, and works for the new site began in 1902. Since then, it’s been a landmark in patient care and spatial distribution.
A very modern project at the time, it pursued renovation and state-of-the-art science and care, favoring sunlight and open spaces for a better recovery of patients. In 2009, an ambitious restoration project turned the complex into the ample, audacious, monumental site we know today.
