Where centuries-old drama takes center stage under the Castilian sky.
Every summer, the quiet Castilian town of Almagro transforms into a vibrant celebration of classical theatre, drawing artists, playwrights, and audiences from around the world. The Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico de Almagro is Spain’s most important stage for Golden Age drama, with performances ranging from traditional Spanish comedies to bold contemporary reinterpretations.

This year marks a historic milestone with Fuenteovejuna, the “classic of classics” by Lope de Vega, staged for the first time under the direction of a woman. Blanca Portillo brings a powerful new perspective to this iconic tale of justice and collective strength, highlighting the festival’s ongoing commitment to relevance, innovation, and inclusivity within the classical canon.
What makes the festival truly special is its setting. At its heart is the Corral de Comedias, a perfectly preserved 17th-century open-air theatre, one of the oldest of its kind in Europe.
Here, under the night sky, the works of Calderón, Lope de Vega, Shakespeare, and Molière come to life with renewed energy and passion. Beyond the corral, performances and workshops spill into historic plazas, convents, and gardens, immersing the entire town in theatrical rhythm.

More than just a cultural event, the festival is a celebration of heritage and imagination. Visitors can explore exhibitions, join panel discussions, or simply enjoy the atmosphere of a town steeped in artistic tradition, a place where past and present take the stage together.
At The Real Thing, we specialize in curating experiences just like this, where culture, setting, and story come together in unforgettable ways.
